Wooden Bridge closed to pedestrians

We've been advised by Dublin Port that last night's storm caused some damage to the pedestrian walkway on the Wooden Bridge. The Walkway is considered unsafe and so they've closed the bridge competely until Saturday afternoon so that it can be repaired.

Unfortunately this means tonight's Troop meeting is cancelled. Also a work parade scheduled for 10.00am Saturday has been deferred to the same time on Sunday.

Dick Vekins Memorial Hike

Our friend, Dick Vekins, passed away 10 years ago and each year we remember him in a way we think he would have liked - walking in the Wicklow hills. This year was no exception with 75 scouts, former scouts, parents and friends taking part in the walk. The route was from Ballinastoe to Lough Tay and back and, in spite of indifferent weather, an enjoyable day all round.

Presentation of Level 2 Kayak Proficiency Certs

Congratulations to Isobel Wilson, Sarah Kelly, Laura Ennis, Evelyn Ball, Georgia O'Shea, Emma Guiney, Niamh Devitt, Audrey Wilson, Aine Ni Sheaghdha and Niamh Buckley who were presented with Level 2 Kayak Proficiency Certificates by the Irish Canoe Union last night.

When presenting the Certificiates, the ICU assessors said their were very impressed by the level of technical ability displayed by the girls.
Unfortunately, we were camera-less last night, so we've no photos of the presentation. However, just to remind you all of what sunny weather looks like, here are some photos of the taken on the day of the assessments last September.

Closure of Wooden Bridge

Dublin Port tell us that the Wooden Bridge at Dollymount will close to traffic on 7 January next for a period of 12 weeks for essential maintenance. The bridge will remain open to pedestrians.

A recent survey
of the Wooden Bridge - the current bridge dates back to 1906 - revealed that the upright piles of the bridge are sound, but most of the cross beams fixed on top of the piles and support the deck of the bridge, require replacement. Most of the decking and the railings also require replacement.

Dublin Port are in contact with the Group and other residents on the island to put in place arrangements to try to minimise disruption while the works are ongoing.
